Bio
Nakita Sekhon (she/her) is a clinical counselling intern completing her Master of Counselling degree at City University of Seattle (Canada).
Identifying as a cisgender, queer, disabled/neurodivergent, Indo-Canadian settler and woman of colour, Nakita recognizes how intersecting identities shape people’s lived experiences and access to care. She brings an anti-oppressive and decolonial lens to her work, supporting individuals, families, and communities who face barriers rooted in systemic oppression.
In addition to her professional training, Nakita draws on lived experiences within the health care system and through profound personal loss, which deepen her compassion and understanding of the challenges clients may encounter. She works with individuals, families, and youth, with a focus on neurodiversity, disability, health-related challenges, and life transitions such as grief and loss.
Nakita believes that each individual has the capacity to create change in their lives at their own pace. Whether exploring the past or envisioning a future aligned with one’s values, she provides a supportive space for self-discovery, healing, and growth. Her goal is to walk alongside clients as they define and reach their own potential.
Her practice is rooted in person-centred, solution-focused, humanistic, and developmental approaches, while also drawing from narrative, psychodynamic, and existential perspectives. Nakita’s background in youth and family counselling, community mental health, and disability advocacy further grounds her work in the realities of systemic barriers.
Nakita is committed to ongoing growth through formal and informal learning opportunities and training, and she hopes to register as a clinical counsellor upon completion of her internship hours. Outside of her counselling work, Nakita enjoys spending time with her partner and toddler. Parenthood and family life continue to shape her perspective, teaching her about patience, joy, and the complexities of balancing multiple roles. She is grateful to live and work on the unceded territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations.
